Rostropovich's Tower

Rostropovich's Tower

About the Exhibition

Rostropovich’s Tower is composed of bronze cellos stacked in a rectangular, symmetrical shape. In this work the artist expresses his love of music and pays homage to the internationally acclaimed conductor of the Washington D.C. Symphony, Mstislav Rostoprovich. Arman (1928-2005, b. Nice, France) frequently incorporates life-size casts of musical instruments into his sculpture. The artist states, “The shapes of the violin, the cello and the guitar have not changed, or changed very little, in 300 years; they are eternal. The accumulation of their forms is like the accumulation of bars of music—once three or four are put together an entire piece has been created.”
